The Reason I Create Art

Jeff Griffin
  1. My art is an expression of art therapy or the life that I feel inside of me today.  So, it has been a way for me to put into art what I appreciate and enjoy about life. Sometimes that may be an expression of joy while at other times I might express sadness, etc. But mostly my art is an expression of life.
  2. Art carries with it the power of the emotions that I feel for life. Mostly the power of my emotions has been connected to the beauty of what I appreciated about the earth and its wildlife. I spent a lot of time in nature appreciating everything about it while photographing all that I saw, loved, and enjoyed.
  3. The art also carries a message of peace. Sometimes I am baffled by humanity because I don’t understand why many people do not fully appreciate and understand the value of ecology, and the beauty of nature in its native state. And sometimes people don’t fully appreciate the value of others (humanity). I try to look at all that I see of both people and earth in a mindful manner. So, I try to communicate with my art mindfulness toward people and earth, my appreciation for life, and a respect for all that there is by choosing some indigenous people of peace from civilizations around the world and surrounding them by their native wildlife (symbolic of living in harmony). I also tried to express in the art the colors, ethnicity, culture, or religion. In this manner I was able to symbolize the beauty and diversity of people along with their respective systemic histories
  4. Surrounded by my art, I am reminded of what my life was all about. I am reminded of being mindful of people, wildlife, and earth. I am reminded of the beauty and joy of what I have lived.

My Story

Any art therapy project or intention from me was not for the purpose of creating art as much as it was about my experiences, my living, feeling, and creating.  What mattered to me was getting at the root of my emotions and thoughts while learning from those thoughts and feelings more about myself, my relationship with others, and the environment. The art was mostly an evolutionary picture of my personal growth or therapy process while following the evolutionary path of humanity.  So, I spent time touching upon those things that were meaningful to me on my journey through life.  For me, that had to include the linch pin from barbaric methods of managing problems to a peaceful means of conflict resolution (India: Gandhi). Then I had an opportunity to surround myself with the art so that I was continually reminded of awesome experiences and journeys. This is my story of life that was about my effort to live mindfully.  So, one could say that my art is an expression of and appreciation for the gift of life.
